炭素鋼試験片が4年間埋め込まれていた、圧縮ベントナイト(クニゲルV1、乾燥密度1.8g/cm3)の炭素鋼との接触面を様々な手法を用いて分析を行い、粘土鉱物の変質、緩衝材としての膨張性能などを調べた。その結果、スメクタイト結晶自身の変化は認められなかったが、層間陽イオンの一部に鉄が入っていることが示唆された。また、鉄が拡散した部分でも含水による膨張性(自己シール性)を有していることがわかった。
