Ionizing radiation was applied to treat environmental pollutants such as NOx and SOx, dioxin, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in gaseous media. Basic and applied researches on the treatment of NOx and SOx greatly helped to commercialize the actual-scale plants in China and Poland. Plant test on the treatment of dioxin in municipal solid incinerator gases revealed that more than 90% of dioxins was decomposed at a dose of 14 kGy. Labolatory-scale experiments on the decomposition of VOCs indicated that hydroxyl radicals are the predominant oxidants for the initial decomposition of the VOCs. It was found that ionizing radiation is one of the advanced oxidation technology for treating hazardous chemicals in the environment.
