Oxygen interstitials make metastable $$beta$$ titanium alloys strong and ductile

Metastable $$beta$$ titanium alloys possess excellent strain-hardening capability, but suffer from a low yield strength. As a result, numerous attempts have been made to strengthen this important structural material in the last decade. Here, we explore the contributions of grain refinement and interstitial additions in raising the yield strength of a Ti-12Mo (wt.%) metastable $$beta$$ titanium alloy. Surprisingly, rather than strengthening the material, grain refinement actually lowers the ultimate tensile strength in this alloy. This unexpected and anomalous behavior is attributed to a significant enhancement in strain-induced $$alpha^{primeprime}$$ martensite phase transformation, where in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis reveals, for the first time, that this phase is much softer than the parent $$beta$$ phase. Instead, a combination of both oxygen addition and grain refinement is found to realize an unprecedented strength-ductility synergy in a Ti-12Mo-0.3O (wt.%) alloy. The advantageous effect of oxygen solutes in this ternary alloy is twofold. Firstly, solute oxygen largely suppresses strain-induced transformation to the $$alpha^{primeprime}$$ martensite phase, even in a fine-grained microstructure, thus avoiding the softening effect of excessive amounts of $$alpha^{primeprime}$$ martensite. Secondly, oxygen solutes readily segregate to twin boundaries, as revealed by atom probe tomography. This restricts the growth of $${332}langle113rangle$$ deformation twins, thereby promoting more extensive twin nucleation, leading to enhanced microstructural refinement. The insights from our work provide a cost-effective rationale for the design of strong yet tough metastable $$beta$$ titanium alloys, with significant implications for more widespread use of this high strength-to-weight structural material.

JAEA is developing a neutronics/thermal-hydraulics coupling simulation code for light-water reactors. Thermal-hydraulic simulation codes applied to the platform are expected to evaluate void fraction distributions in fuel assemblies under operational conditions, which is necessary for neutron transport simulation, and need to be validated using void fraction distribution data in a rod bundle under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. To obtain the data for code validation, we have been measuring the instantaneous void fraction distribution in a 4$$times$$4 simulated fuel assembly by a wire mesh sensor. In this paper, we report the results of the experiments with pressure and flow rate as parameters at a maximum pressure of 2.6 MPa.

Development of numerical simulation method of natural convection around heated porous medium by using JUPITER

For contaminated water management in decommissioning Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Stations, reduction in water injection, intermittent injection water and air cooling are considered. However, since there are uncertainties of fuel debris in the PCV, it is necessary to examine and evaluate optimal cooling methods according to the distribution state of the fuel debris and the progress of the fuel debris retrieval work in advance. We have developed a method for estimating the thermal behavior in the air cooling, including the influence of the position, heat generation and the porosity of fuel debris. Since a large-scale thermal-hydraulics analysis of natural convection is necessary for the method, JUPITER developed independently by JAEA is used. It is however difficult to perform the large-scale thermal-hydraulics analysis with JUPITER by modeling the internal structure of the debris which may consist of a porous medium. Therefore, it is possible to analyze the heat transfer of the porous medium by adding porous models to JUPITER. In this study, we report the validation of JUPITER applied the porous model and discuss which heat transfer models are most effective in porous models such as series, parallel and geometric mean models. To obtain validation data of JUPITER for the natural convective heat transfer analysis around the porous medium, we performed the heat transfer and the flow visualization experiments of the natural convection in the experimental system including the porous medium. In the comparison between the experiment and the numerical analysis with each model, the numerical result with the geometric mean model was the closest of the models to the experimental results. However, the numerical results of the temperature and the velocity were overestimated for those experimental results. In particular, the temperature near the interface between the porous medium and air was more overestimated.

In Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, failure of cooling system for spent fuel pool occurred and there was a concern that the spent fuels were damaged. Then a safety measures for SFP cooling in severe accident condition is required. As a countermeasure for SFP severe accident, it is considered that a portable spray is used for SFP cooling in such condition. In this research project, the numerical simulation methods have been developed in order to evaluate the applicability of portable spray system for cooling SFPs. And experiments were also performed in order to get a knowledge of spray cooling phenomena and validation data for the numerical simulation methods. As one of the experiments, a cooling experiment by using 4$$times$$4 simulated fuel assembly were performed and temperature distribution during spray cooling process were measured. In this paper, the results of a cooling experiment are reported.

Development of particle collection technique by using bubble breakup phenomenon in venturi tube

In decommissioning Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, the issue is confinement of radioactive aerosols in the primary containment vessel. Although a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter is used to collect the aerosol particles, pretreatment equipment such as a scrubber may be applied to reduce the load of HEPA filters. In the scrubber, the aerosol particles are removed by moving from gas to liquid through gas-liquid interface. Since the collection efficiency (CE) depends on gas-liquid interfacial area, fine bubbles are necessary to obtain high collection efficiency. JAEA developed a new particle removal technique by using bubble breakup phenomenon in a Venturi tube. To confirm usefulness of the technique, we performed the CE measurements and observed gas-liquid two-phase flow in the Venturi tube. In comparison with a straight pipe type, the Venturi type can have removed particles more 1,000 than it. The CE is almost the same as a HEPA filter. In addition, the Venturi type has the enough CE as the pretreatment equipment for various materials of particles such as Kanto loam, SUS and oil. Besides, we clarified that the CE of the Venturi type depended on the gas and liquid flow rates. The CE increases with the increase of the liquid flow rate but decreases with the increase of the gas flow rate. This is because the CE is affected by the bubble breakup phenomenon in the Venturi tube. In the experiment, we confirmed that cavitation number which is the parameter of the bubble breakup was related to the CE of the Venturi type.

We investigated the oxidation of oxygen vacancies at the surface of anatase TiO$$_{2}$$(001) using supersonic seeded molecular beam (SSMB) of oxygen. The oxygen vacancies at the top-surface and sub-surface could be eliminated by the supply of oxygen using an SSMB. These results indicate that the interstitial vacancies can be mostly assigned to oxygen vacancies, which can be effectively eliminated by using an oxygen SSMB. Oxygen vacancies are present on the surface of anatase TiO$$_{2}$$(001) when it is untreated before transfer to a vacuum chamber. These vacancies, which are stable in the as-grown condition, could also be effectively eliminated using the oxygen SSMB.

We have established an archive system of livestock and wild animals from the surrounding ex-evacuation zone. Wildlife within the alert zone have been exposed to low-dose-rate (LDR) radiation for a long and continuous time. In this study, we analysed the morphological characteristics of the testes and in vitro fertilization (IVF) capacity of cryopreserved sperm of raccoons from the ex-evacuation zone of the FDNPP accident. This study revealed that the chronic and LDR radiation exposure associated with the FDNPP accident had no adverse effect on the reproductive characteristics and functions of male raccoons.

The spallation and fragmentation reactions of $$^{136}$$Xe induced by proton, deuteron and carbon at 168 MeV/nucleon were studied at RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory via the inverse kinematics technique. The cross sections of the lighter products are larger in the carbon-induced reactions due to the higher total kinetic energy of carbon. The energy dependence was investigated by comparing the newly obtained data with previous results obtained at higher reaction energies. The experimental data were compared with the results of SPACS, EPAX, PHITS and DEURACS calculations. These data serve as benchmarks for the model calculations.

How different is the core of $$^{25}$$F from $$^{24}$$O$$_{g.s.}$$ ?

The structure of a neutron-rich $$^{25}$$F nucleus is investigated by a quasifree ($$p,2p$$) knockout reaction. The sum of spectroscopic factors of $$pi 0d_{5/2}$$ orbital is found to be 1.0 $$pm$$ 0.3. The result shows that the $$^{24}$$O core of $$^{25}$$F nucleus significantly differs from a free $$^{24}$$O nucleus, and the core consists of $$sim$$35% $$^{24}$$O$$_{rm g.s.}$$, and $$sim$$65% excited $$^{24}$$O. The result shows that the $$^{24}$$O core of $$^{25}$$F nucleus significantly differs from a free $$^{24}$$O nucleus. The result may infer that the addition of the $$0d_{5/2}$$ proton considerably changes the neutron structure in $$^{25}$$F from that in $$^{24}$$O, which could be a possible mechanism responsible for the oxygen dripline anomaly.

An inter-digital H-mode drift-tube linac (IH-DTL) is developed in a muon linac at the J-PARC E34 experiment. IH-DTL will accelerate muons from 0.34 MeV to 4.5 MeV at a drive frequency of 324 MHz. Since IH-DTL adopts an APF method, with which the beam is focused in the transverse direction using the rf field only, the proper beam matching of the phase-space distribution is required before the injection into the IH-DTL. Thus, an IH-DTL prototype was fabricated to evaluate the performance of the cavity and beam transmission. As a preparation of the high-power test, tuners and coupler are designed and fabricated. In this paper, the development of the tuner and the coupler and the result of the low-power measurement will be presented.

An in-flight separator, BigRIPS, at RIBF in RIKEN provides each experiment with specific nuclides separated from many nuclides produced by projectile fragmentation or in-flight fission. In this process, nuclides other than separated ones are discarded on the slits in BigRIPS, although they include many nuclides interested from the view point of nuclear structure. In order to extract these nuclides for parasitic experiments, we are developing a method using laser ion-source (PALIS). A test experiment with $$^{78}$$Se beam from RIBF has been performed by using a gas cell set in BigRIPS. Unstable nuclides around $$^{67}$$Se were stopped in the gas cell in accordance with a calculation using LISE code. The stopping efficiency has been estimated to be about 30%. As a next step, we will establish the technique for extracting reaction products from the gas cell.

Enhancement of element production by incomplete fusion reaction with weakly bound deuteron

Searching for effective pathways for the production of proton- and neutron-rich isotopes through an optimal combination of reaction mechanism and energy is one of the main driving forces behind experimental and theoretical nuclear reaction studies as well as for practical applications in nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste. We report on a study on incomplete fusion induced by deuteron, which contains one proton and one neutron with a weak binding energy and is easily broken up. This reaction study was achieved by measuring directly the cross sections for both proton and deuteron for $$^{107}$$Pd at 50 MeV/u via inverse kinematics technique. The results provide direct experimental evidence for the onset of a cross-section enhancement at high energy, indicating the potential of incomplete fusion induced by loosely-bound nuclei for creating proton-rich isotopes and nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste.

We have developed an Interdigital H-mode (IH) Drift-Tube Linac (DTL) design with an alternative phase focusing (APF) scheme for a muon linac, in order to measure the anomalous magnetic moment and electric dipole moment (EDM) of muons at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The IH-DTL accelerates muons from beta 0.08 to 0.28 at an operational frequency of 324 MHz. The output beam emittances are calculated as 0.315 $$pi$$ and 0.195 $$pi$$ mm mrad in the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively, which satisfies the experimental requirement.
