Since the International Commission on Radiological Protection recommended reducing the occupational equivalent dose limit for the lens of the eye in 2011, there have been extensive discussions in various countries. This paper reviews the current situations in radiation protection of the ocular lens and the discussions on the potential impact of the new lens dose limit in Japan. Topics include historical changes to the lens dose limit, the current situations in occupational lens exposures (e.g., in medical workers, nuclear workers, and Fukushima nuclear power plant workers) and measurements, and the current status of biological studies and epidemiological studies on radiation cataracts. Our focus is on the situations in Japan, but we believe such information sharing will be useful in many other countries.

This report summarizes Bilateral Cooperative Research between Japan Atomic Energy Agency and Malaysian Nuclear Agency (a representative of the Government of Malaysia) implemented from 2002 to 2012 under "THE IMPLEMENTING ARRANGEMENT BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT OF MALAYSIA AND THE JAPAN ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY ON THE RESEARCH COOPERATION IN THE FIELD OF RADIATION PROSSING". The research activities in two Cooperative Research Programs, "Mutation Induction of Orchid Plants by Ion Beams" and "Generating New Ornamental Plant Varieties Using Ion Beams" performed 2002-2007 and 2007-2012, respectively, are contained. The lists of steering committee meetings, irradiation experiments, and publications/presentations of each program are also attached in the Appendixes.

Screening of novel anthocyanin mutants by re-irradiation of ion beams in ${it Arabidopsis thaliana}$ mutant

Kitamura, Satoshi; Ono, Yutaka; Narumi, Issey*

JAEA-Review 2015-022, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2014, P. 64, 2016/02

Forward genetics approaches have helped elucidate the anthocyanin biosynthetic pathway in plants. We used the ${it Arabidopsisa}$ banyuls (ban) mutant, which accumulates anthocyanins, instead of colorless proanthocyanidin precursors, in immature seeds. In contrast to standard screens for mutants lacking anthocyanins in leaves/stems, we mutagenized ban plants and screened for mutants showing differences in pigmentation of immature seeds. The pale banyuls1 (pab1) mutation was found to show reduced levels of anthocyanins in immature seed coat. Here we characterize this mutant at the molecular level.

${it Arabidopsis pab1}$, a mutant with reduced anthocyanins in immature seeds from $$banyuls$$, harbors a mutation in the MATE transporter $$FFT$$

Here, we used the Arabidopsis banyuls (ban) mutant, which accumulates anthocyanins, instead of colorless proanthocyanidin precursors, in immature seeds. We mutagenized ban plants and screened for mutants showing differences in pigmentation of immature seeds. The pale banyuls1 (pab1) mutation caused reduced anthocyanin pigmentation in immature seeds compared with ban, but showed normal expression of anthocyanin biosynthetic genes. Map-based cloning showed that two independent pab1 alleles disrupted the MATE-type transporter gene FFT/DTX35. Complementation of pab1 with FFT confirmed that mutation in FFT causes the pab1 phenotype. During development, FFT promoter activity was detected in the seed-coat layers that accumulate flavonoids. Anthocyanins accumulate in the vacuole and FFT fused to GFP mainly localized in the vacuolar membrane.

Addendum report of the JHPS expert committee on radiation protection of the lens of the eye, 2; When and how should the dosimetry of beta $$H_{rm p}$$(3) be made?

Hoken Butsuri, 50(4), p.257 - 261, 2015/12

In a mixed field of photon and beta radiations, the same dose assigned to skin is normally assigned to the dose to the lens of the eye as a conservative estimate of H$$_{p}$$(3). In exceptional cases that a very high beta dose might be imparted of the same order with the dose limit, however, the conservatively biased dose must be too limiting, and thereby an accurate estimate of beta $$H_{rm p}$$(3) is desirable. This article presents a practical proposal of when and how the dosimetry of beta $$H_{rm p}$$(3) should be made.
