We assessed the repeatability and reproducibility of methods for determining low dissolved radiocesium concentrations in freshwater in Fukushima. Twenty-one laboratories pre-concentrated three of 10 L samples by five different pre-concentration methods (prussian-blue-impregnated filter cartridges, coprecipitation with ammonium phosphomolybdate, evaporation, solid-phase extraction disks, and ion-exchange resin columns), and activity of radiocesium was measured. The z-scores for all of the $$^{137}$$Cs results were within $$pm$$2, indicating that the methods were accurate. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) indicating the variability in the results from different laboratories were larger than the RSDs indicating the variability in the results from each separate laboratory.

We have used a beam scraper with the incident angle of 65deg to reduce the beam power deposition density in the MEBT between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC linac. The 65$$^{circ}$$ scraper was irradiated by the H$$^{-}$$ beam up to particle number of 1.47E22. We observed a lot of surface projections with several hundred micrometers high in the beam irradiation damage on the scraper by using the laser microscope. In order to study the limits of scrapers, we constructed a new 3 MeV linac at J-PARC. We will conduct the scraper irradiation test at the end of this year.

Late information is introduced on dose evaluation due to external exposures which employ an important role in the exposures due to the Fukushima accident. First, merits and demerits of the currently used two methods, that is the estimation based air dose rates and the measurements using personal dosimeters, are discussed indicating some basic data after a fundamental concept of external dose evaluation is provided. Next, main activities are summarized on external dose measurements and evaluations after the accident. Finally, a new trial on dose evaluation in introduced.

This study integrates 3D models of rock fractures from different sources and hydraulic properties aimed at identifying relationships between fractures and permeability. A geostatistical method (GEOFRAC) that can incorporate orientations of sampled data was applied to 50,900 borehole fractures for spatial modeling of fractures over a 12 km by 8 km area, to a depth of 1.5 km. GEOFRAC produced a plausible 3D fracture model, in that the orientations of simulated fractures correspond to those of the sample data and the continuous fractures appeared near a known fault. Small-scale fracture distributions with dominant orientations were also characterized around the two shafts using fracture data from the shaft walls. By integrating the 3D model of hydraulic conductivity using sequential Gaussian simulation with the GEOFRAC fractures from the borehole data, the fracture sizes and directions that strongly affect permeable features were identified.

The modifying of the JT-60U magnet system to the superconducting coils (JT-60SA) is progressing as a satellite facility for ITER by both parties of Japanese government and European commission (EU) in the Broader Approach agreement. The magnet system for JT-60SA consists of 18 Toroidal Field (TF) coils, a Central Solenoid (CS) with 4 modules, and 6 Equilibrium Field (EF) coils. The manufacturing of the JT-60SA magnet system is in progress in EU and Japan. The JT-60SA superconducting magnet system generates an average heat load of 3.2 kW at 4 K to the cryoplant, from nuclear and thermal radiation, conduction and electromagnetic heating, and requires current supplies 20 kA for 4 CS modules and 6 EF coils, 25.7 kA to 18 TF coils. The helium flow to remove this heat, consisting of supercritical helium at pressures up to 0.5 MPa and temperature between 4.4-4.8 K, is distributed to the coils and structures through the valve box (VB) from the cryoline connecting to the auxiliary cold box located outside the torus hall. The feeders also contain the electrical supplies from the current lead transitions to room temperature to the coil. The feeder components consist of the in-cryostat feeders with flexible parts to allow coil operational displacements from the connection pipes out of the cryostat, including S-bend conductor to allow differential thermal contraction and the coil terminal boxes (CTBs) with HIS current leads. A measurement and control system is required to monitor and control these coils and feeders for safety and optimal operational availability. For each coil, both current and supercritical helium are supplied from external systems and are controlled from a central system as part of the regular operation with plasma pulses. Quench detection instruments for superconducting coils, feeders and HTS current leads are provided as a separate, stand alone system.

The structure of the free-form of ${it Achromobacter}$ protease I (API) at pD 8.0 was refined by simultaneous use of single crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction data sets to investigate the protonation states of key catalytic residues of the serine protease. Occupancy refinement of the catalytic triad in the active site of API free-form showed that ca. 30% of the imidazole ring of H57 and ca. 70% of the hydroxyl group of S194 were deuterated. This observation indicates that a major fraction of S194 is protonated in the absence of a substrate. The protonation state of the catalytic triad in API was compared with the bovine $$beta$$-trypsin-BPTI complex. The comparison led to the hypothesis that close contact of a substrate with S194 could lower the acidity of its hydroxyl group, thereby allowing H57 to extract the hydrogen from the hydroxyl group of S194. H210, which is a residue specific to API, does not form a hydrogen bond with the catalytic triad residue D113. Instead, H210 forms a hydrogen bond network with S176, H177 and a water molecule. The close proximity of the bulky, hydrophobic residue W169 may protect this hydrogen bond network, and this protection may stabilize the function of API over a wide pH range.

Results of whole body counting for JAEA staff members engaged in the emergency radiological monitoring for the Fukushima nuclear disaster

A massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011 resulted in an enormous amount of release of radioactivity to the environment. On the day after the earthquake occurrence, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) started emergency radiological monitoring. The measurements with whole body counter (WBC) for the staff members who had returned from Fukushima started at the end of March. The measured activity of $$^{131}$$I due to inhalation for emergency staff varied from LLD to 7 kBq, which corresponded to a range of estimated initial intakes of $$<$$ 1 to 60 kBq when extrapolated back to the date on which the staff started the operation in Fukushima. The measured activity of $$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs were both in the ranges of LLD - 3 kBq. The range of initial intake of $$^{137}$$Cs to $$^{131}$$I was 11 when taking a median from all the measurements. The maximum committed effective dose of 0.8 mSv was recorded for a worker, a member of the 2nd monitoring team dispatched from March 13 to 14.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is developing a geoscientific research project, Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) project, in order to establish scientific and technological basis for geological disposal of HLW. A series of geological mapping, reflection seismic survey, borehole investigation and geological investigations around research galleries are carried out to identify the distribution and the heterogeneity of fractures and faults that are potential major flow-pass of groundwater as field investigations. This paper describes geological investigations in the MIU project, focused on the evaluation of their effectiveness in order to understand the deep underground geological environment.

We have studied conduction-band (CB) electronic states of a typical valence-transition compound YbInCu$$_4$$ by means of temperature-dependent hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HX-PES), soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and soft X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SX-PES) of the valence band. We have described the valence transition in YbInCu$$_4$$ in terms of the charge transfer from the CB to Yb 4$$f$$ states.

The basic principle of radiation control at plutonium facility such as characteristics of plutonium and relevant radionuclide which are operated in nuclear fuel cycle facilities is introduced and potential radioactive contaminations in accident is discussed. As a practice, decontamination procedure of skin at Tokai Reprocessing Plant, some of the operating principles and applications of various radiation detection and measurement instruments for contamination control and occupational monitoring for internal contamination are introduced. Special methods of measurement for alpha emitters for performing radiological monitoring such as radio autography of plutonium contamination on smear samples, nasal swab sampling and measurement, in vivo and in vitro analysis for plutonium and uranium have been improved and proven. The internal dose calculation code was originally developed in order to estimate retrospectively in case of accidental intake of plutonium.

Equations for estimating chest wall thickness in lung counting at JAEA-NCL

Chest wall thickness (CWT) of the subject is an important modifier to determine the lung burden of inhaled actinides such as Pu isotopes or $$^{241}$$Am through lung counting. CWT prediction equations as a function of biometric indexes have been proposed by many authors based on chest wall measurements made with an ultrasound device. In the present study we derived such equations from CWT data of our subjects and then evaluated their applicability to monitoring with our currently used lung counter, mainly examining the accuracy of determinations of $$^{241}$$Am, useful as a unique indicator that can be detected in most cases of internal contamination with Pu compounds. The error of the equations obtained was found to be within the range of - 8 mm to + 6 mm against actual CWT values of our subjects, complying with the bias performance criteria for direct measurements. However, further studies might be needed to clarify the effect of the difference in posture on the CWT caused by the modification of the counting geometry made for our lung counter.
