Detailed $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy of the exotic neon isotope $$^{28}$$Ne has been performed using the one-neutron removal reaction from $$^{29}$$Ne. Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for $$^{28}$$Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N = 20 and N = 28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.

A Boiling phenomenon in a liquid flow field is known as forced-convection boiling. We numerically investigated the boiling system on a cylinder in a flow at a saturated condition. To deal with such a phenomenon, we developed a numerical scheme based on the pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann method. The collision was performed in the space of central moments (CMs) to enhance stability for high Reynolds numbers. Furthermore, additional terms for thermodynamic consistency were derived in a CMs framework. The effectiveness of the model was tested against some boiling processes, including nucleation, growth, and departure of a vapor bubble for high Reynolds numbers. Our model can reproduce all the boiling regimes without the artificial initial vapor phase. We found that the Nukiyama curve appears even though the focused system is the forced-convection system. Also, our simulations support experimental observations of intermittent direct solid-liquid contact even in the film-boiling regime.

An attempt was made to separate and identify hydrogen peaks desorbed from lattice defects formed by plastic-strain in the presence of hydrogen in tempered martensitic steel showing quasi-cleavage fracture using thermal desorption spectroscopy from a low temperature (L-TDS) and positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS). The L-TDS results made it possible to separate two peaks, namely, that of the original desorption and also that of new desorption. The PAS results revealed that the new desorption obtained by L-TDS corresponded to vacancy-type defects. Hydrogen enhanced vacancy-type defect concentration, approximately 10$$^{-5}$$ order in terms of atomic ratio, formed within 1.5 mm from the fracture surface, These results indicate that the accumulation of excess vacancy-type defects enhanced by hydrogen in the local region can lead to nanovoid nucleation and coalescence in plastic deformation, resulting in quasi-cleavage fracture of tempered martensitic steel.

The development of safe, rapid and highly sensitive analytical methods for radioactive samples, especially actinide (An) ions, represents an important challenge. Here we propose a methodology for selecting appropriate emissive probes for An ions with very low consumption and emission of radioactivity by capillary electrophoresis-laser-induced fluorescence detection (CE-LIF), using a small chemical library of probes with eight different chelating moieties. It was found that the emissive probe, which possesses the tetradentate chelating moiety, was suitable for detecting uranyl ions. The detection limit for the uranyl-probe complex using CE-LIF combined with dynamic ternary complexation and on-capillary concentration techniques was determined to be 0.7 ppt. This method was successfully applied to real radioactive liquid samples collected from nuclear facilities.

Since 2015, Mitsubishi Nuclear Fuel (MNF) has joined in a Japanese R&D project of ATF founded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) as a subcontractor to Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) which is the prime contractor to METI. In this program, MNF plans to evaluate an influence of Silicon Carbide (SiC) composite cladding upon fuel rod behavior in current pressurized water reactors (PWR). This paper reports the evaluation result of the applicability of fuel rod with SiC composite cladding for a conventional PWR. For the applicability evaluations of SiC composite to conventional PWR, both of analytical evaluations and out-of-pile tests for SiC composite were conducted. Analytical evaluations were performed by Mitsubishi's own fuel rod design code and the fuel rod behavior evaluation code developed by JAEA. These codes were modified to evaluate the behavior of the fuel rod with SiC composite cladding. As out-of-pile tests, thermal diffusivity measurement and autoclave corrosion test for SiC composite samples were performed. Test apparatus were developed for evaluation of performance of SiC composite under the condition simulated design basis accident (DBA).

Determination of detrapping and trapping rate constants for hydrogen based on experimental thermal desorption spectra

For understanding hydrogen (H) embrittlement of steels, it is necessary to infer the state that defects trap H in the steels. Thermal desorption spectra of H obtained by the thermal desorption spectrometry (TDS) are used for inferring such a state. Because the thermal desorption spectra include the influence of experimental conditions and hydrogen diffusion as well as information of the defects trapping H, it is necessary to interpret the spectra using the numerical simulation. In the presentation, we determined the detrapping and the trapping rate constants which are necessary for the simulation from the experimental spectra obtained for plate specimens which is so small that H diffusion is ignorable. Then we confirmed that the model using the obtained rate constants can simulate the spectra of larger cylindrical specimens, so that it was found that the rate constant for small specimens can be used for the simulation of the spectra for specimens of different shape or size.

The thermal desorption spectra which reflect the H segregation state can be obtained by heating a specimen including H at a constant rate. However, the simulation of spectra needs to extract information of the H segregation state because spectra is affected by experimental conditions and H diffusion. The detrapping activation energy E$$_a$$ and the pre-exponential factor of detraping rate constant which are simulation parameters are fixed from the data previously reported or by fitting experimental spectra. Instead, we evaluated both of them from the experimental spectra of the specimen in which the H diffusion effect can be ignored, and simulated the spectra using them. As a result, in the case of iron, we could simulate spectra better than by the previous parameters. In the case of tempered martensitic steel, we could simulate spectra by the value obtained by adjusting the evaluated p$$_0$$ along with the evaluated E$$_a$$.

For the safety design in which heat is properly removed from the molten fuel after the core disruptive accident in a sodium-cooled fast reactor, the estimation of the breakup behavior of molten fuel discharged into the coolant like a jet is desired. In order to investigate the influence of viscocity on the jet behavior, we simulated a jet discharged into a coolant using the three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann model for two-phase fluid, and examined the influence of Ohnesorge number and Reynolds number on the jet behavior. As a result, we made clear that it is necessary to consider viscosity of the coolant as well as that of the jet for the estimation of jet behavior.

Preliminary assessment for dust contamination of ITER in-vessel transporter

After plasma operation of the ITER reactor, irradiated radioactive dust will accumulate in the vacuum vessel (VV). The In Vessel Transporter (IVT) will be installed in the VV and remove the blanket modules for maintenance. The IVT will be carried back to the Hot Cell Facilities (HCF) after exchanging the blanket, and the IVT itself also needs maintenance. It is considered that the maintenance workers will be exposed to the irradiated radioactive dust attached to the IVT surface. In this study, dust contamination of the IVT is evaluated to assess exposure during maintenance work in the HCF. The IVT contamination scenario is assumed in the ITER project. From plasma shut down until maintenance is performed on the IVT will take 345 days under the ITER project assumption. Under this scenario, the effective dose rate from irradiated radioactive dust was calculated as an infinite plate for each nuclide. As a result, W-181 and Ta-182 were the dominant nuclides for the effective dose rate. If all dust is W-181 or Ta-182, the effective dose rate is about 400 $$mu$$Sv/h and 100 $$mu$$Sv/h respectively. Nevertheless, using the dose limit determined by the ITER project and the estimated maximum maintenance time, the effective dose rate limit was calculated to be 4.18 $$mu$$Sv/h under these limited conditions. To satisfy the dose rate limit, decontamination processes were assumed and the dose rate after decontamination was evaluated.

A simple and rapid method with low radiation exposure risk was developed for the determination of neodymium in spent nuclear fuel by CE with LIF detection using a fluorescent ligand having a macrocyclic hexadentate polyaminocarboxylate structure. The concentration of Nd(III) in a spent nuclear fuel sample was determined with no interference from various matrix elements, including lanthanides and uranium (at a 200-fold excess), with 92 $$pm$$ 3% recovery. This is due to method's high resolution based on establishing a ternary complex equilibrium during migration in which the hydroxyl ion plays an auxiliary role.

Recent studies about ECRIS have revealed that not only the maximum magnetic field (B$$_{rm max}$$) but also the minimum field(B$$_{rm min}$$) has effect on the production ability. A superconducting ECRIS which can change the B$$_{rm min}$$ distribution with plural solenoids shows that a flat distribution of B$$_{rm min}$$ (flat B$$_{rm min}$$) gives better performance in highly charged ion production than classical B$$_{rm min}$$. Superconducting device of conduction cooling type is useful, because a Lq-helium system needs a large quantity of Lq-helium to be supplied at after every quench. However, many refrigerators are necessary to keep low temperature against the heat through the current leads of a number of coils to form flat-B$$_{rm min}$$. Therefore, we have designed a coil configuration which can adjust B$$_{rm max}$$ and flat-B$$_{rm min}$$ with the minimum lead number of four. The flat-B$$_{rm min}$$ is formed by three central coils connected one another between the mirror coils. There is another pair of coils to adjust B$$_{rm max}$$ of the injection side keeping flat B$$_{rm min}$$ unchanged.
