Preparation and characterization of single-phase SiC nanotubes and C-SiC coaxial nanotubes

Preparation conditions of single-phase SiC nanotubes and C-SiC coaxial nanotubes were investigated. The characterization of single-phase SiC nanotubes and C-SiC coaxial nanotubes were carried out. The SiC nanowires, which were made of the catenated SiC grains of 50-200 nm in diameter, were obtained in carbon nanotubes reacted at 1450 $$^{circ}$$C. The only C-SiC coaxial nanotubes were formed at 1300 $$^{circ}$$C. A few single-phase SiC nantoubes were synthesized at 1200 $$^{circ}$$C for 100 h. More than half number of nanotubes reacted at 1200 $$^{circ}$$C for 100 h were altered to single-phase SiC nantoubes by heat treatment of 600 $$^{circ}$$C for 1h in air since the remained carbon was removed. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis revealed that the atomic ratio of Si to C in single-phase SiC nanotubes was almost 1; these single-phase SiC nanotubes consisted of near-stoichiometric SiC grains.

Single phase silicon carbide (SiC) nanotubes were succeeded in synthesized by the reaction of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with Si powder at 1200 $$^{circ}$$C for 100 h. The X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that much CNTs reacted at 1200 $$^{circ}$$C for 100 h was transformed to SiC. The results of TEM observation reveal that not only the coexisted nanotubes with SiC and graphite phase but also single phase SiC nanotubes were synthesized by reacting for 100 h. The proportion of single phase SiC nanotubes to the coexisted nanotubes increased by heat treatment at 600 $$^{circ}$$C in air for 1 h since the remained carbon was removed.

The workshop on application of free-electron laser (FEL) and nuclear isomer study was held at Tokai Research Establishment of JAERI on September 28. The workshop was devoted to the discussions and the presentations of two thema as follows: Six papers associated with the laser compton gamma-ray, the photonuclear physics and the nuclear astrophysics using the gannma-ray produced by the T3 laser were presented in the morning session. Seven papers including an invited talk on the behavior of molecules in intense laser light fields and associated with the chemical decomposition of dioxin, the silicon isotope separetion, the infrared photoexcitation spectroscopy, the laser-tissue interaction and the single-wall carbon nanotube and nanohorn by FEL etc. were also presented in the afternoon session. The intensive discussion was exchanged among approximately 50 participants. Each performance during the first workshop was fully telecomunicated by a video conference system between Tokai and Kizu (Kansai Research Establishment) sites.

Denitration characteristics of aqueous metal nitrate solution by microwave heating with carbon nanotube-containing alumina composite ceramic jacket

Microwave heating in combination with an external heating source has been used to improve powder properties by compensating for heat transfer losses. However, the external heating source in the microwave irradiation field may degrade the heating elements. A hybrid heating method has been developed to use composite ceramic jacket prepared by adding carbon nanotube (CNT) to alumina. To evaluate the effect of CNT-containing alumina composite ceramic jacket (CNT jacket), experiments were implemented. In both copper nitrate solution and nickel nitrate solution, the time to reach the maximum temperature was earlier when the CNT jacket was used than when the alumina jacket was used. The temperature of the nickel nitrate solution was kept at the maximum temperature when the CNT jacket was used, while the temperature tended to decrease after reaching to 280$$^{circ}$$C when the alumina jacket was used. The hybrid heating method using the CNT jacket can obtain metal oxides.
