Micropores and mass transfer in the formation of myrmekites

Yuguchi, Takashi*; Yuasa, Haruka*; Izumino, Yuya*; Nakashima, Kazuo*; Sasao, Eiji; Nishiyama, Tadao*

American Mineralogist, 107(3), p.476 - 488, 2022/03

 Times Cited Count:2 Percentile:20.65(Geochemistry & Geophysics)

The methodology and interpretations in this study provide new insights into the mechanism of myrmekite formation in a granitic system. The presence of micropores in the myrmekites and this study clarified that the genesis of micropores is related to the formation of myrmekites in the Toki granite. The results led to an increased understanding of (1) an estimate of mass transfer between the reactant and product minerals, and the inflow and outflow of components with consideration of the volume change due to micropore formation, (2) the factor controlling the formation of micropores during myrmekitization, and (3) the sequential variations in the hydrothermal fluid chemistry during sub-solidus conditions. The micropores act as a migration pathway for hydrothermal fluid and thus enhance the mass transfer within a granitic body starting with the myrmekite formation and continuing through the present day and into the future.

Multi-methodical study of the Ti, Fe$$^{2+}$$ and Fe$$^{3+}$$ distribution in chevkinite-subgroup minerals; X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, $$^{57}$$Fe M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopy and electron-microprobe analyses

Three non-metamict chevkinite-subgroup minerals, from Cape Ashizuri, Japan, Tangir Valley, Diamar District, Pakistan and Haramosh Mts., Skardu district, Pakistan, were studied by crystal chemical techniques. Powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopic observations confirmed well crystalline samples. Electron-microprobe analyses indicated the general composition known for chevkinite-(Ce). Site scattering values determined by single-crystal X-ray structure refinements suggested assignment of subordinate Nb to the octahedral M3 and M4 sites, minor Th to M1 for the Ashizuri sample and minor Mg to M1 for both samples from Pakistan. Neutron time-of-flight powder diffraction studies were applied to determine the Ti/Fe distribution among octahedral sites for all samples and Mossbauer spectroscopy served for the Fe valence assignment at the four octahedral sites. The dominant iron valence at M1 of the Haramosh sample is ferric whereas for samples Nos. 1 and 2 iron is ferrous.

Unique origin of skarn at the Ohori base metal deposit, Yamagata Prefecture, NE Japan; C, O and S isotopic study

The Ohori ore deposit is one of the Cu-Pb-Zn deposits in the Green Tuff region, NE Japan. It consists of a skarn-type (Kaninomata) and a vein-type (Nakanomata) orebody. Carbon isotopic ratios of the skarn calcite are slightly lower than those of the Cretaceous skarn deposits in Japan, since the carbonaceous rock of the Kaninomata orebody originated by hydrothermal activity. Sulfur isotopic ratio of the Kaninomata and Nakanomata orebodies are mostly in a narrow range, the sulfur in both orebodies is thought to have the same origin.

We examined the intracellular localization of cisplatin, a key chemotherapeutic agent, in esophageal cancer cell lines and determined their sensitivity to cisplatin using in-air micro-PIXE. Two human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cell lines, TE-2 and TE-13, were examined for their response to cisplatin using MTT assay, flow cytometry and DNA fragmentation assays. Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was also used to evaluate the mRNA expression of multidrug resistance protein 2 (MRP2) in both cell lines. Platinum localizations of intracellular and intranuclear were measured using in-air micro-PIXE. TE-2 cells were more sensitive to cisplatin than TE-13 cells. The results of this study suggest that in-air micro-PIXE could be a useful quantitative method for evaluating the cisplatin sensitivity of individual cells. Finally, we speculate that MRP2 in the cell membrane may play an important role in regulating cisplatin sensitivity of ESCC cells.

Analyses of streamed neutron spectra at TIARA using DUCT-III

Masukawa, Fumihiro; Nakano, Hideo*; Nakashima, Hiroshi; Sasamoto, Nobuo; Tayama, Ryuichi*; Hayashi, Katsumi*; Shin, Kazuo*

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 41(Suppl.4), p.46 - 49, 2004/03

A simple design code for duct-streaming radiations, DUCT-III was applied to the analyses of the streamed neutron spectra measured at TIARA labyrinth with two bends. The code satisfactorily reproduced the measured neutron energy spectra and the Monte Carlo calculations, except that every calculation overestimated the measured thermal components by factor of 2 or 3.

Development of a magnetic field monitoring system for the JAERI AVF cyclotron

In the JAERI AVF cyclotron, unstable phenomena, such as beam intensity decrease, were observed. We found that an increase in temperature of the iron body of the magnet induced the drift of the magnetic field. Stabilization of the iron body temperature was achieved. We have developed a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) magnetometer with an accuracy of the order of 10$$^{-6}$$ to measure the stability of the cyclotron magnetic field with a large gradient by using a pair of correction coils to reduce the field gradient and by eliminating the effect of the RF.

Shielding experiments and analyses on proton accelerator facility at TIARA

Nakashima, Hiroshi; Sakamoto, Yukio*; Tanaka, Shunichi; Tanaka, Susumu; Baba, Mamoru*; Nakamura, Takashi*; Hirayama, Hideo*; Shin, Kazuo*; JAERI-Universities Collaboration Working Group for Accelerator Shielding Study

Proceedings of 6th International Meeting on Nuclear Applications of Accelerator Technology (AccApp '03), p.959 - 968, 2003/00

In order to validate shielding design methods on proton accelerator facilities, a series of shielding experiments in several tens of MeV energy region were carried out at the Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application (TIARA) of Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). The experiments include thick target neutron yield (TTY) measurements by charged particles, deep penetration experiments on concrete, steel and polyethylene shields using p-Li monoenergetic neutron source and radiation streaming experiment at a labyrinth of TIARA using p-Cu white neutron source. These experimental results are compared with calculation results with some high-energy particle transport codes such as MCNPX and NMTC/JAERI. The TTY measurements were analyzed by a code developed by Shin with a moving source model, and the streaming experiment was also analyzed by the DUCT-III code based on Shin's equation. This paper reviews the experimental results and the analyses on the results.
