Application of transition-edge sensors for micro-X-ray fluorescence measurements and micro-X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy; a case study of uranium speciation in biotite obtained from a uranium mine

In this study, we successfully applied a transition-edge sensor (TES) spectrometer as a detector for microbeam X-ray measurements from a synchrotron X-ray light source to determine uranium (U) distribution at the micro-scale and its chemical species in biotite obtained from the U mine. It is difficult to separate the fluorescent X-ray of the U L$$alpha$$$$_{1}$$ line at 13.615 keV from that of the Rb K$$alpha$$ line at 13.395 keV in the X-ray fluorescence spectrum with an energy resolution of approximately 220 eV of the conventional silicon drift detector (SDD). Meanwhile, the fluorescent X-rays of U L$$alpha$$$$_{1}$$ and Rb K$$alpha$$ were fully separated by TES with 50 eV energy resolution at the energy of around 13 keV. The successful peak separation by TES led to an accurate mapping analysis of trace U in micro-X-ray fluorescence measurements and a decrease in the signal-to-background ratio in micro-X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy.

A superconducting transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter is an ideal X-ray detector for experiments at accelerator facilities because of good energy resolution and high efficiency. To study the performance of the TES detector with a high-intensity pulsed charged-particle beam, we measured X-ray spectra with a pulsed muon beam at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) in Japan. We found substantial temporal shifts of the X-ray energy correlated with the arrival time of the pulsed muon beam, which was reasonably explained by pulse pileup due to the incidence of energetic particles from the initial pulsed beam.

We observed electronic $$K$$X rays emitted from muonic iron atoms using a superconducting transition-edge-type sensor microcalorimeter. The energy resolution of 5.2 eV in FWHM allowed us to observe the asymmetric broad profile of the electronic characteristic $$K$$$$alpha$$ and $$K$$$$beta$$ X rays together with the hypersatellite $$K$$$$alpha$$ X rays around 6 keV. This signature reflects the time-dependent screening of the nuclear charge by the negative muon and the $$L$$-shell electrons, accompanied by electron side-feeding. Assisted by a simulation, this data clearly reveals the electronic $$K$$- and $$L$$-shell hole production and their temporal evolution during the muon cascade process.

Shielding performance of newly developed boron-loaded concrete for DT neutrons

In order to enhance the neutron shielding performance, we developed concrete with boron of more than 10 wt%. We performed a neutron shielding experiment using the mockup of the newly developed boron-loaded concrete and DT neutrons at FNS in JAEA, and measured the reaction rates of the $$^{93}$$Nb(n,2n)$$^{92m}$$Nb and $$^{197}$$Au(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{198}$$Au reactions in the mockup. The calculations were conducted by using MCNP-5.14 and FENDL-2.1. The calculation results agreed well with the measured ones, and we confirmed that the accuracy was very good on the atomic composition data of the boron-loaded concrete and their nuclear data. In addition, we calculated effective dose rates and reaction rates of the $$^{59}$$Co(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{60}$$Co and $$^{151}$$Eu(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{152}$$Eu reactions in the boron-loaded concrete and other concretes. It is concluded that the boron-loaded concrete has much better shielding performance for DT neutrons than other concretes.

A photon detector for unfolding X-ray energy distribution has been previously reported. Simulation studies on the unfolding method for this detector are discussed for diagnostic X-rays and mixed-source $$gamma$$ rays of $$^{137}$$Cs/$$^{60}$$Co. Response functions for diverse diagnostic X-rays are almost indistinguishable and an unfolding using error reduction method is not sufficiently worked. The spectrum surveillance method is effective in this case. However, a simple error reduction method is useful for mixed $$gamma$$ rays. For both techniques, the neural network method is promising.

In order to enhance the neutron shielding performance in nuclear power facilities, medical facilities and research facilities with large-scale accelerators, we have developed a new concrete with high concentration of boron of 10 weight %. Natural Colemanite minerals with a mass of boron were applied to the aggregates for the concrete. In addition, modification of the cement type and application of the special mixture material were performed to eliminate bad effects of the insufficient hardening and the strength degradation of the cement, and we successfully increased the boron concentration in the concrete up to 10 weight %. The flow rate in JIS flow test was about 150 mm before hardening of the material, which showed good flow property. We also confirmed that the compressive strength was about 40 N/mm$$^{2}$$ at the material age of 7 days. Based on the results, the block specimens were fabricated for the shielding experiment using DT neutrons.

In the ITER gyrotron development activity, the local control system for ITER gyrotron has been carried out using the ITER CODAC Core system. This control system is composed of Fast controller and Slow controller. The former has a role to control the gyrotron oscillation, timing control, data acquisition, etc. The later has a role to manage the operation phase shift, machine protection and alarm management, etc. Using this prototype system, we succeeded the gyrotron oscillation and 5 kHz power modulation.

We have developed proton spin polarization technique for contrast variation in small angle neutron scattering (SANS), which utilizes that neutron scattering section can be controlled by polarizing proton spins. Consequently, we succeeded in the analysis of nano-structure in multi-component samples. We will report the detail of our recent activity for getting higher proton spin oplarization. The recent results of SANS measurement with proton spin polarization conducted for the first time at TAIKAN in J-PARC will also be reported.

Neutron scattering length changes as aligning the spin direction of protons in a sample. By use of this phenomenon, we have developed spin contrast variation technique for studying nano-scale structure formed in multi-component systems. Analysis of uranium in environmental samples by micro X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy using transition edge sensors

Biotite is known as a host phase that retains uranium (U) in uranium deposits at Ningyo-Toge and Tono, and it is expected that the distribution of U in biotite will provide insight into the concentration and long-term immobilization of U. However, biotite contains rubidium (Rb), which interferes with X-ray fluorescence analysis, making it difficult to accurately determine the distribution of U-Rb in biotite by measurement using a conventional solid state detector (SSD). In this study, we developed a method to use a transition edge sensor (TES) as a detector in microbeam X-ray fluorescence analysis, which enables us to detect X-ray fluorescence with an energy resolution of about 20 eV and to obtain a Rb K$$alpha$$ line at 13.373 keV and a U L$$alpha$$ line at 13.612 keV can be completely separated. Therefore,the developed method enables us to accurately determine the distribution of U-Rb in biotite.

The reduction of uranium on biotite was studied to obtain insight into the immobilization of uranium in the environment. The chemical species of uranium in biotite were studied using a superconducting transition edge sensor and an X-ray emission spectrometer to remove interference from rubidium in biotite. As a result, the speciation of uranium in biotite collected from former uranium deposits was possible. The XANES spectra of the biotite indicated that the uranium in the biotite was partially reduced.
