Identification of capable faults using fault rock geochemical signatures; A Case study from offset granitic bedrock on the Tsuruga Peninsula, central Japan

In order to identify specific chemical changes induced by recent, near-surface faulting, we compared two faults of different size and evolutionary history, the active Shiraki-Nyu Fault and a nearby minor, inactive fault in central Japan, in terms of their mineralogical and geochemical features. Our analyses suggest that (1) chemical changes such as depletion of Na$$_{2}$$O and CaO derived from smectite and illite formation, and that changes such as increase of U, Y and REEs derived from absorption to these clay minerals, occurred during the fault initiation and subsequent retrograde alteration and are identical in the two faults, and that (2) MnO increase accompanied by FeO depletion and a positive Ce anomaly can be a key to identify specific chemical changes due to recent, near-surface faulting, because this could be related to upward migration and oxidation of fault-driven reduced fluids from deep underground to the near-surface environment.

This paper aims to develop a methodology for understanding the fault activity by observing exposed fault planes without covering younger strata. Based on purpose, faults developed in relatively homogeneous rocks such granitic types are investigated as follows; Gosuke Dam upstream outcrop of Gosukebashi Fault and Funasaka-nishi outcrop of Rokkou Fault were selected for the study of an active fault; and K-3 outcrop of Rokkou Houraikyo Fault was chosen for a non-active fault.

Current status of the driver laser system for intense terahertz wave generation

We have constructed a high power kHz laser system using Yb:YAG thin-disk as a gain medium for a driver laser of THz wave generation. A 4-bounce regenerative amplifier is constructed and output energy up to 10 mJ is obtained. Using compressed pulse, we demonstrated THz wave generation with LiNbO$$_{3}$$ crystal.

High power laser developments with femtosecond to nanosecond pulse durations for laser shock science and engineering

We describe three specific high power laser systems that are being developed in our laboratory for many applications in high field science, nonlinear optics and material processing. We report on a femtosecond petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can produce a pulse energy of 20 J of 40 fs pulse duration, a picosecond high intensity Yb:YAG chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can generate a pulse energy of 100 mJ of 0.5 ps pulse duration, and a nanosecond high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser system that can provide an average power of 360 W with a pulse duration of 30 ns delivered at a 1 kHz repetition rate. We discuss the basic design aspects and present the results from our experimental investigations of these laser systems.

A Sampling method of oriented small sample from fault cores for SEM observation

Staples for a stapler can be used as a frame of a small oriented sample taken from fragile and scarce fault gouge. The fault gouge was slotted for staples of an insert. Staples are a group of about ten or less ones holding right-angled three small surfaces. Pre-oriented staples set the slot would remove then presented for the SEM observation. Only a knife, some glues and simple equipment are needed for the method in the field or laboratories.

Development of high resistant anti-reflection coating by using Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$/SiO$$_{2}$$ multilayer

We designed and fabricated high damage-resistant AR coating using Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$/SiO$$_{2}$$ layers. As a result of irradiation test using 500 ps pulses at 1 kHz, the damage threshold of the AR coating was estimated to be over 36 J/cm$$^{2}$$ (average value). We also fabricated high reflection (HR) mirrors using Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$/SiO$$_{2}$$ layers added on Ta$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$/SiO$$_{2}$$ layers and measured damage threshold of them for 7 ns, 500 ps, and 1 ps pulses.

Improvement of diffraction efficiency of dielectric transmission gratings using anti-reflection coatings

A novel method for increasing diffraction efficiency of transmission gratings is proposed. In this method, dielectric multilayers are inserted between a grating region and a substrate. These multilayers work as an anti-reflection coating for the transmission grating. It is presented that a grating with 1740 grooves/mm has the diffraction efficiency over 99% using this anti-reflection coating.

We irradiated the focusing soft X-ray laser pulses having a wavelength of 13.9 nm and the duration of 7 ps to aluminum surface. After the irradiation process, the irradiated surface was observed with a scanning electron microscope. The surface modifications caused by soft X-ray laser single pulse exposure were clearly seen. In addition, it was found that the conical structures having around 100 nm in diameters were formed in the shallow features. The nano-meter size modified surface structures on aluminum induced by the soft X-ray laser pulse is interesting as the newly surface structure. Hence, the soft X-ray laser beam would be a candidate for a tool of micromachining. We also provide a thermomechanical modeling of the soft X-ray laser interaction with aluminum briefly to explain the surface modification.

This paper reviews recent improvement in the source development of laser-driven X-ray lasers and the applications in the research fields of material science, laser processing, X-ray imaging, and radiation damage in biological cells. In the application for material science, we have firstly observed temporal correlation between the domain structures of ferro-electric substance under the Curie temperature. In the laser processing, new X-ray laser interferometer reveals us the nano-scale surface distortion of substance pumped by a femto-second optical pulse. In the X-ray diffraction image, we have taken several static images of micro-structure of samples: now we are trying to extend the objective to nano-scale dynamics using pump and probe method. In the radiation damage of biological cells, we observed double strand break in DNA using X-ray laser exposure; this results are compared with the case using incoherent several KeV X-ray exposure.

The understanding of the dynamics of the initial process is important for the micro processing and welding by the ultra-short laser pulse. The X-ray laser is suitable for probing this initial process because it has short wavelength (Ni-like Ag, 13.9 nm) and short duration (7 ps). For this investigation, the origin of time of the pumping pulse is quite important. In this study, we used the scintillation plate and the plasma gate technique to realize the spatial and temporal synchronization of the pump and probe pulses. For the spatial alignment, a CsI scintillation plate that was set at the sample position was illuminated by both the X-ray laser pulse, and the fluorescence light were detected by the CCD camera. For the temporal synchronization, we set a thin foil at the sample position. We measured the transmission of the X-ray laser while changing a temporal delay of the pumping laser with respect to the time of X-ray laser pulse to obtain the origin of the irradiation time.

Main theme of our group in this middle term JAEA program is a development of high-averaged power short pulse laser system pumped by LDs (laser diodes). To realize this next term laser system, we have just started considering a Yb doped ceramics laser with a several members of KPSI. We have also developed a laser system named QUADRA (high-Quality Ultra ADvanced RAdiation Sources) in C-Phost program. In the first term up to FYH22, essential studies for QUADRA have been investigated. In the second term, QUADRA development will be merged with the next term laser system in JAEA to produce high powered THz radiation. In addition to these developments, we support to improve the performances of conventional high-power laser system, J-KAREN, for the requirement of advanced application studies in this middle term JAEA program.

The spatial resolution of hydrothermal method grown zinc oxide (ZnO) scintillator was evaluated using X-ray laser focused with Fresnel zone plate. The fluorescence image of the ZnO scintillator was measured to be less than 10um using CCD camera coupled with a Schbartzchild expander mirror. The availability of large size ZnO crystal up to 3-inch is quite attractive for future lithography and imaging applications.

This paper reviews the temporal contrast and spatial beam quality improvement techniques in a high intensity Ti:sapphire laser system that is based on chirped-pulse amplification (CPA). We describe a low gain optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) preamplifier that uses high energy, clean pulse seeding and is shown to significantly improve the contrast to better than 10$$^{-10}$$-10$$^{-11}$$ relative to the peak of the main femtosecond pulse. We also report the use of a diffractive optical element for beam homogenization of a 100 J level Nd:glass green pump laser, achieving a flat-topped spatial profile with a filling factor near 80 %.

Demonstration of a high-efficiency, broadband optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification as a front-end for a high intensity laser

High conversion efficiency of optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) is demonstrated with the use of a commercial frequency-doubled Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser. In the high energy seeded OPCPA, we have achieved a pump-to-signal conversion efficiency of 28%. Our result represents, to our knowledge, the most efficient OPCPA to date pumped by a commercial frequency-doubled Q-switched Nd:YAG laser.

We have developed a femtosecond high intensity laser system, which combines both Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) and optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) techniques, that produces more than 30 J broadband output energy, indicating the potential for achieving peak powers in excess of 500 TW. With a cleaned high-energy seeded OPCPA preamplifier as a front-end in the system, for the final compressed pulse (without pumping the booster amplifier) we found that the temporal contrast in this system exceeds 10$$^{10}$$ on the sub-nanosecond timescale, and is near 10$$^{12}$$ on the nanosecond timescale before the main femtosecond pulse. Using diffractive optical elements for beam homogenization of 100-J level high-energy Nd:glass green pump laser in a Ti:sapphire final amplifier, we have successfully generated broadband high-energy output with near-perfect top-hat intensity distributions.
