Study of Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing without using Organic solvent

Sato, Soichi

The "PUREX Process" is the only process to purify uranium and plutonium in spent nuclear fuels for large scale reprocessing plant in the world at present. It requires the complete dissolution of the fuel by using concentrated nitric acid before extracting uranium, which accounts for more than 95% in the spent fuel. If fission products (FPs) can be separated from the spent fuel before dissolution, following process, such as extraction, evaporation and other conventional process in the plant, will be miniaturized. We applied magnetic separation technique to remove FPs from spent fuels in a powder form after selective sulfurization of FPs, especially rare-earth elements, with H2S and / or CS2.
