Comparative study of cesium sorption on crushed and intact sedimentary rock

Xia, X.; Iijima, Kazuki  ; Kamei, Gento ; Shibata, Masahiro

Comparative study was conducted on sorption by the batch method with crushed sedimentary rock samples and by flow through method with intact sedimentary rock samples. The distribution coefficients for cesium determined in the flow through experiments are around one order of magnitude lower than those obtained in the batch experiments. The values of the distribution coefficients were modified by specific surface area, considered as a key factor resulting in the differences. The difference between the values of the distribution coefficients could within a factor of 3. It suggests that it is reasonably applicability of the distribution coefficients obtained from batch experiments, with considerations of both groundwater and rock mineralogy.
