The engineering diffractometer for the investigation of stresses within engineering components is now being developed to build at J-PARC project. To determine stress with sufficient accuracy in many engineering studies, our diffractometer is on a decouple-poisoned liquid H$$_{2}$$ moderator to provide neutrons giving good symmetrical diffraction profiles in the acceptable wavelength range. The diffractometer is planned as 40 m primary and 2 m secondary flight paths instrument and lying on a curved supermirror neutron guide instead of a conventional T$$_{0}$$-chopper to reduce fast neutrons and $$gamma$$ rays. The diffractometer will also involved a sample-translator capable of holding large and heavy real industrial scale components. Detailed design work has being continuously made. The optimization of the diffractometer has being continuously performed with Monte Carlo simulation. Appropriate resolution of 0.2%$$Delta$$$$d/d$$ or less to the stress analysis was expected.
