Corrosion resistance of metallic material for reprocessing plant in NaOH solution

Motooka, Takafumi; Yamamoto, Masahiro

The corrosion test in NaOH solution was conducted, the corrosion resistance such as Ti, Zr, and Nb alloys was evaluated, and those corrosion mechanisms were considered by the surface analysis and the electrochemical corrosion test. The test material is Nb-5W alloy, pure Nb, pure Zr, and Ti-5Ta alloy. The test solution is 1-20wt% NaOH solution of 50$$^{circ}$$C. The corrosion resistance was evaluated from the weight measurement result. Moreover, the electrochemical corrosion test and the surface analysis on the corrosion side were executed. The corrosion rate in NaOH solutions was high in Nb-5W alloy$$>$$Nb$$>$$Ti-5Ta alloy$$>$$Zr. The principal ingredient of the surface film of Zr andTi-5Ta alloy were ZrO$$_{2}$$ and TiO$$_{2}$$, respectively. That of Nb and Nb-5W alloy was Na$$_{8}$$Nb$$_{6}$$O$$_{19}$$. The difference of corrosion resistance originated in the solubility of film. The potential-pH diagram of Nb in the alkali region was reviewed from this experiment result.
