Features of fusion welding of oxide dispersion strengthened steel claddings for fast reactor fuel pins

Tabakin, E. M.*; Ivanovich, Yu, V.*; Baikalov, Y. I.*; Ukai, Shigeharu*; Seki, Masayuki; Kaito, Takeji

The main purpose of the investigations was to develop the remote welding technology for experimental fuel claddings of ODS steels of ferritic and martensitic classes for fast reactors. This task has been successfully solved using the remote fusion welding. Due to the use of the welding modes providing the minimum time of existence of the welded metal in molten condition, the possibility of pores formation in the welds is reduced. In the welds made by argon-arc welding with a non-fusible electrode the number of pores of the rejected size is much higher than in the case of the laser impulse welding. Special systems have been set up to provide implementation of the remote welding techniques.
