Observation of microstructural changes in lithium titanate with multi-ion irradiation by using FTIR-PAS

Yamaki, Daiju; Aruga, Takeo; Tanifuji, Takaaki*; Jitsukawa, Shiro

The microstructural changes in lithium titanate, which is regarded as one of the most suitable candidates for the solid tritium breeder material of D-T fusion reactors, irradiated with the H$$^{+}$$, He$$^{+}$$ and O$$^{2+}$$ beams were observed by FT-IR PAS. The results suggest that the amount of TiO$$_{2}$$ formed in the material and OH$$^{-}$$ near the surface are strongly affected by displacement per atom occurred with irradiation and the method of irradiation. This suggests that the microstructural changes in lithium titanate by irradiation affect the tritium release behavior generated by nuclear reaction, and the compatibility between the breeding materials and the structural materials.
