Recent improvements of heavy-ion microbeam system for bystander study

Funayama, Tomoo; Kakizaki, Takehiko; Wada, Seiichi*; Yokota, Yuichiro; Sakashita, Tetsuya; Hamada, Nobuyuki*; Kobayashi, Yasuhiko

Analysis of molecular mechanisms of bystander effect is one of the most important subjects in recent radiobiological field, and target irradiation of cells with microbeam is considered as the most effective means to solve this issue. However, our system had a limitation in targeting accuracy and irradiation speed. In addition, the limitation of beam time interfered the rapid progress of the study. Therefore, to adopt the effective analysis of bystander mechanisms we had improved our system as follows: (1) Upgrading performance of cell targeting system, (2) Introduction of UV micro-laser interface for off-beam irradiation, (3) Improvement of post-irradiation analysis software.
