We have here examined clonogenic survival of confluent human lung cancer A549 cells exposed to X-rays or 220 MeV 12C$$^{5+}$$ charged particles. Targeted exposure of 0.001-0.005 % of cells within the confluent population were resulted in 8-15 % reduction of surviving fraction, suggesting that the induced bystander responses are involved in mechanism of cell death by heavy particles.
