Ratio of tritiated water and hydrogen generated in mercury through a nuclear reaction

Manabe, Kentaro   ; Yokoyama, Sumi

Tritium will be generated in a mercury target of a spallation neutron source in accelerator facilities. The air in the facilities may be contaminated by tritium when tritium leaks to the air from the target. The chemical form of tritium is necessary information to estimate internal doses because the dose coefficient of tritium extremely depends on its chemical form. We simulated the tritium generation in a mercury target by thermal neutron irradiation of liquid lithium amalgam to examine the ratio of tritiated water (HTO) and tritiated hydrogen (HT). The ratio of HTO and HT generated in lithium amalgam was 4:6 under this experimental condition.
