Automated rapid radiochemical separations of the heaviest elements

Nagame, Yuichiro

To perform rapid and repetitive chromatographic experiments with the heaviest elements, we developed an automated rapid ion-exchange separation apparatus AIDA (Automated Ion-exchange separation apparatus coupled with the Detection system for Alpha-spectroscopy). AIDA consists of a miniaturized computer controlled high performance liquid chromatography system and an automated on-line $$alpha$$-particle detection system. It enables us to perform cyclic discontinuous column chromatographic separations of short-lived nuclides in aqueous solutions and automated detection of $$alpha$$-particles within a typical cycle of 1-2 min. Ion-exchange chromatographic study of element 104, rutherfordium $$^{261}$$Rf, T$$_{1/2}$$ = 78 s, produced via the reaction of $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{18}$$O, 5n), with a cross section of 10 nb, at the JAEA tandem accelerator is presented.
