Crystal structure and magnetic properties of new ternary uranium compounds U$$_{2/3}$$Pd$$_{2}$$Al$$_{5}$$

We found two ternary intermetallic compounds in the ternary system U-Pd-Al. ${U$_x$(Al$_3$)$_{1-x}$}$Pd$$_2$$Al$$_4$$ ($$x sim 0.67$$) crystallizes in the hexagonal P6$$_{3}$$/mmc structure with lattice parameters $$a$$ = 4.3278 and $$c$$ = 16.2870 ${AA}$. Uranium atom occupies one crystallographic site (1/3 2/3 1/4). However, it is randomly replaced by (Al$$_3$$), leading to a peculiar magnetic ground state. UPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ has the same structure as the first neptunium-based superconductor NpPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ which consists of a stacking of AuCu$$_3$$-type NpPd$$_3$$ and Al. UPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ compound is only stable at hight temperature: annealing treatment at 800 $$^circ$$C decomposes it into hexagonal UPd$$_3$$ and PdAl. The stability of AnPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ is most likely related to the instability of cubic AnPd$$_3$$.
