Neutron irradiation effect on isotopically tailored $$^{11}$$B$$_{4}$$C

Morohashi, Yuko ; Maruyama, Tadashi*; Donomae, Takako  ; Tachi, Yoshiaki  ; Onose, Shoji

The present investigation was made to elucidate the effect of neutron irradiation on dimensional change and thermal conductivity of isotopically tailored $$^{11}$$B$$_{4}$$C. The specimens used in the present investigation are 99% $$^{11}$$B enriched $$^{11}$$B$$_{4}$$C, 91% $$^{10}$$B enriched $$^{10}$$B$$_{4}$$C and $$beta$$-SiC. The results of measurements indicated that the changes in dimension and thermal conductivity of neutron irradiated $$^{11}$$B$$_{4}$$C were substantially smaller than those of $$^{10}$$B$$_{4}$$C and SiC. Post irradiation annealing experiment measurements for $$^{11}$$B$$_{4}$$C showed that dimensional change and thermal conductivity were almost completely annealed out at 1400$$^{circ}$$C. The changes in thermal conductivity by annealing were analyzed in terms of phonon scattering theory. The onset of recovery in thermal conductivity of $$^{11}$$B$$_{4}$$C well agreed well with irradiation temperature, however the recovery in length did not coincide with irradiation temperature.
