Spectral phase determination of attosecond pulses using a spin-orbit coherent state of alkali-metal atoms

We propose a method for characterizing attosecond pulses by means of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of alkali-metal atoms in the P state. Photoelectron spectroscopy of a coherent superposition of the spin-orbit split P$$_{1/2}$$ and P$$_{3/2}$$ levels allows us to observe the spectral shearing interference through the measurement of the quantum beat between the two levels. We show that the phase offset of the quantum beat in alkali-metal atoms is directly utilized for determining the spectral phase of attosecond pulses.
