Charge exchange cross section for carbon clusters on several stripper gases in tandem accelerator

Saito, Yuichi; Chiba, Atsuya; Adachi, Masahiro; Narumi, Kazumasa

Measuring cluster ion beam transmission as a function of the target gas density at a charge exchange section in a tandem accelerator allows us to determine cross sections for collision-induced destruction and a charge exchange from a negative ion (q = -1) to a positive ion (q = +1). Using the TIARA 3MV tandem accelerator, we evaluated the cross sections for carbon cluster ions C$$_n$$(n=4, 8) in MeV energy regions on several gas targets (He, N$$_2$$, CO$$_2$$, SF$$_6$$). As a result, it was revealed that the destruction cross sections and the charge exchange cross sections for C$$_4$$ and C$$_8$$ were on the order of 10$$^{-15}$$ cm$$^2$$ and 10$$^{-16}$$ cm$$^2$$, and on the order of 10$$^{-14}$$ cm$$^2$$ and 10$$^{-16}$$ cm$$^2$$, respectively.
