Linear relation between electric polarization and magnetic chirality in the commensurate phase of $$R$$Mn$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$ ($$R=$$Ho, Er)

Polarized neutron scattering experiments have been performed on multiferroic materials $$R$$Mn$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$ ($$R=$$Ho, Er) under electric fields to study the direct relation between the electric polarization and the magnetic chiral structure of Mn spins. It is found that, after cooling in electric fields down to temperatures where the system has both commensurate magnetic order and ferroelectricity, the magnetic chiral order parameter is proportional to the polarization.
