Direct observation of the energy gap generating the 1/3 magnetization plateau in the spin-1/2 trimer chain compound Cu$$_{3}$$(P$$_{2}$$O$$_{6}$$OD)$$_{2}$$ by inelastic neutron scattering measurements

The magnetism of spin-1/2 trimer chain system Cu$$_{3}$$(P$$_{2}$$O$$_{6}$$OD)$$_{2}$$ is studied by means of inelastic neutron scattering. A spin excitation gap of 9.8meV corresponding to singlet -triplet excitation is observed and together with the magnetization plateau data the AF exchange interaction parameters of the trimer system could be determined as J$$_{1}$$=111K and J$$_{2}$$=30K.
