Radiation reaction in the interaction of ultra-high irradiance lasers with electrons

In recent years there has been rapid development of ultra-high irradiance lasers. Coincidently, high energy quasi-monoenergetic ultra-short electron bunches have been generated using such lasers in laser-plasma interaction experiments. We show that the combined use of such lasers and electron bunches can result in large amounts of radiation. A 1 GeV electron is shown to lose 96% of it's energy in the interaction with an ultra-high irradiance laser of $$2times10^{22}$$ W/cm$$^2$$.
