On the use of spectral lines emitted by carbon ions for plasma diagnostics in magnetic fusion devices

Lithium-like carbon lines have been analyzed to obtain the electron density and temperature of the emissive plasma region in the tokamak divertor, where high electron density up to $$10^{22} m^{-3}$$ have been deduced near the X-point region for detached plasmas. To confirm the measured electron density, we propose to use line broadening. In this paper, profiles of C IV n=5-6 ($$lambda$$ = 465.8 nm) and n=6-7 ($$lambda$$= 772.6 nm) lines are computed for plasma conditions of tokamak divertors ($$n_e=10^{19}-10^{22} m^{-3}$$, $$T_e$$=1-10 eV). The first comparisons are promising and encourage fitting of various experimental data from JT-60U and other magnetic fusion devices. Our results are based on calculations made with a modified version of the PPP line shape code using an atomic data basis built with the most accurate available data for carbon in addition to the Cowan code.
