The Solvent extraction of lanthanide into ionic liqiuds

Kurahashi, Kensuke; Shimojo, Kojiro   ; Naganawa, Hirochika

The solvent extraction of lanthanide from aqueous phase into ionic liquids (ILs) has been investigated using ${it N,N,N',N'}$-tetra(${it n}$-octyl)diglycolamide (TODGA) using as an extractant. Compared with the extraction in the isooctane system, application of ILs as extraction phase enhances unprecedentedly the extraction performance of TODGA for lanthanides and the quantitative extraction of La$$^{3+}$$, Eu$$^{3+}$$ and Lu$$^{3+}$$ has been accomplished at low concentration of TODGA. It was found that the transfer of lanthanides with TODGA into ILs proceeds via cation-exchange mechanism between cations of ILs and lanthanides in aqueous phase, in contrast to ion pair extraction mechanism in the isooctane system. It is suggested that this cation-exchange mechanism provides the feature of extractability and selectivity in the ILs system.
