Research and development on Water-Cooled Solid Breeder Test Blanket Module in JAEA

Japan is performing R&Ds on Test Blanket Module (TBM) based on the Water-Cooled Solid Breeder (WCSB) concept, aiming at prototypical module test of DEMO blanket using ITER. This paper presents major achievements, such as, the design of the TBM including interfacing structure, development of Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) joining technology for the first wall with built in cooling channel, successful fabrication of near full-scale TBM first wall mock-up, evaluation of the thermo-mechanical performance of a solid breeder pebble bed and the safety assessment, including Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Postulated Initiating Event (PIE) selection and preliminary safety analysis.
