Fusion Research and Development Directorate
This annual report provides an overview of major results and progress on research and development activities at Fusion Research and Development Directorate of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) from April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008, including those performed in collaboration with other directorates of JAEA, research institutes, and universities. In October 2007, ITER Agreements entered into force and JAEA was designated as the Japanese Domestic Agency by Japanese Government. In June 2007, JAEA was assigned as the Implementing Agency for the Broader Approach Activities. The JT-60U operation regime was extended toward the long sustainment of high normalized beta () with good confinement (). In fusion reactor technologies, a steady state operation of the 170 GHz gyrotron up to 800 s with 1 MW was demonstrated for ITER. In addition, theoretical and analytical researches on fusion plasmas and design study on DEMO reactor were progressed substantially.
