Local structural analysis on crystalline materials by using atomic Pair Distribution Function (PDF)

The concept of atomic pair distribution function and the experimental method which obtains PDF, are shown in detail. As examples of the applications of PDF analyses to crystalline materials, we introduce the relation between local structural distortion and negative thermal expansion observed in giant negative thermal expansion material Mn$$_3$$Cu$$_{1-x}$$Ge$$_x$$N, and the observation of domain structure with lower symmetry in bulk sample of multiferroic material BiMnO$$_3$$.
