Frustrating the lamellar ordering transition of polystyrene-${it block}$-polyisoprene with a C$$_{60}$$ additive

Zhao, Y.; Hashimoto, Takeji; Douglas, J.*

We have made nanocomposites of a symmetric PS-$$b$$-PI BCP and C$$_{60}$$, and have studied the impact of this nanoparticle on the morphology and thermodynamic nature of the lamellar BCP ordering transition. Increasing the C$$_{60}$$ concentration to a modest value as large as 1% by weight proves to be sufficient to frustrate BCP ordering altogether. Evidently, the addition of nanoparticles to BCP materials can lead to significant changes in the thermodynamics of BCP ordering and offers new opportunities for materials development based on these nanocomposites.
