Fundamental study on shape dependency of input energy for failure

Minagawa, Keisuke*; Fujita, Satoshi*; Kitamura, Seiji ; Okamura, Shigeki

Energy balance equation has been proposed as a new seismic design method. The main feature of the energy balance equation is that it explains accumulated information of motion. Therefore energy balance is suitable to investigate influence of cumulative load. We have already conducted a study that applied the energy balance equation to mechanical structure, and confirmed a relationship between input energy and fatigue failure from results of an experiment. In this paper, we investigate differences in input energy for failure. An experimental model whose cross-section has the width of 12 mm and the breadth of 3 mm. The models are damaged by fatigue failure which vibration response under resonance condition causes. Then input energy for failure is calculated from experimental results. Finally the input energy for failure of this experimental model is compared with it of previous experimental model.
