Neutron beam focusing using large-m supermirrors coated on precisely-figured aspheric surfaces

Development of a neutron focusing mirror, which combines high-Q supermirror with ultra high-precision substrates, are presented. This mirror is based on the large-m supermirrors developed at JAEA and the ultra-precise surface figuring technique using Numerically Controlled Local Wet Etching (NC-LWE) at Osaka University. Combining these techniques enables us to develop high-performance focusing mirrors for neutrons. We have manufactured a 1-dimentional elliptic focusing mirror which is a $$m=4$$ NiC/Ti supermirror deposited on a elliptically figured surface of fused quartz. This mirror accepts neutron beams of 0.12 deg in divergence with focal length of 2100 mm. Neutron measurements showed the focused beam size of 0.35 mm, intensity gain of 6 and signal-to-noize ratio of $$10^3$$. In this contribution, results of the characteristic tests and an application to a compact small angle scattering will be presented.
