Development of an H$$^{-}$$ ion source for Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex upgrade

A cesium (Cs)-free H$$^{-}$$ ion source driven with a lanthanum hexaboride (LaB$$_{6}$$) filament was adopted as the ion source for the first stage of J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex). At present, the maximum beam current from the ion source is 38 mA, with which J-PARC can produce a proton beam power of 0.6 MW at 3 GeV. In order to satisfy the beam power of 1 MW required for the final stage of J-PARC in near future, we have to increase ion source beam current to more than 60mA. Therefore, we started to develop a Cs-seeded type ion source by adding an external Cs injection system to the same type ion source as the present J-PARC ion source. As a result, the negative ion beam current of 70 mA from the source using a tungsten-filament instead of a LaB$$_{6}$$-filament was obtained with the low arc discharge power of 15 kW (100 V $$times$$ 150 A). The test is now in progress.
