In order to establish tritium safe handling technology, establishment of tritium accountancy technology and tritium inventory control technology is indispensable. JAEA has designed a Fusion DEMO plant (DEMO). A mission of the DEMO is to demonstrate electric power generation and tritium breeding. Current design concept of the DEMO is based on the ferritic steel structure such as F82H steel cooled by pressurized water of PWR like conditions and ceramic breeder tritium breeding blanket. In such system, tritium will permeate to cooling water through the structure material due to high operating temperature and higher tritium permeability of F82H. In this study, tritium inventory in the DEMO plant during the DEMO plant operation has been evaluated. Based on this result, issues for tritium accountancy and tritium inventory control have been extracted. As the results, it was found that at least 1/100 of tritium permeation reduction is required at the breeding blanket, since tritium inventory in the cooling system is unacceptable level in a viewpoint of tritiated water handling experience without any permeation protection method. Additionally, it is also found that accurate dynamic tritium accountancy technology (1% accuracy) should be developed in order to measure a large amount of tritium produced or consumed in the fusion reactor in a viewpoint of tritium accountancy.
