Recent discovery of a new class of iron-based new superconductors has attracted considerable attraction. In the very early stage calculations of phonon properties appeared and suggested that the superconductivity in these materials are not phonon mediated. However, our inelastic X-ray scattering studies suggest that some branches show pronounced softening compared to LDA-based phonon calculations. Further investigations on superconducting single crystals of PrFeAsO$$_{1-y}$$ showed no significant changes in phonon spectra across T$$_c$$. However, the spectra are found to agree better with calculations of a magnetic parent material (orthorhombic), even if the real superconducting compounds are non-magnetic and show tetragonal symmetry.
