Development of radiation grafted polymer electrolyte membrane for electro-electrodialysis of HI-I$$_{2}$$-H$$_{2}$$O mixture

Tanaka, Nobuyuki ; Yamaki, Tetsuya; Asano, Masaharu; Maekawa, Yasunari; Onuki, Kaoru

For the improvement of the efficiency of thermochemical water-splitting IS process, it is necessary to pre-concentrate the HIx solution to over-azeotropic concentration. The development of the radiation grafted polymer electrolyte membrane was pushed forward and the result for fuel cells was gained. As the result of the application to HI concentration, when compared to Nafion the tested membranes exhibited lower electric cell resistance, and thereby decreasing up to 40% at 100$$^{circ}$$C of the overall energy required in the concentration operation.
