Tungsten is effective element for solid-solution strengthening and ferrite former in 9CrODS ferritic steel, however excessive addition leads to a Laves phase formation. Appropriate tungsten concentration in 9CrODS ferritic steel was turned out to be around 2 mass%, which induces high temperature strength without Laves phase precipitation. The effect of solid-solution strengthening by dissolved tungsten in 9CrODS steel seems to be relatively small, as compared with strengthening by retainment of residual-alpha ferrite.
