A position-sensitive neutron detector that can be alternative to a conventional helium-3 gas detector is vital to address emerging helium-3 shortage problem. We have proposed a new position-sensitive scintillator detector that employs wavelength-shifting fibers for light read out. The small prototype detector that has pixels of 7 $$times$$ 8 with a pixel size of 5 $$times$$5 mm exhibited a spatial resolution of 5 mm, $$gamma$$ sensitivity of about $$10^{-6}$$ and a detector efficiency of about 30% for thermal neutrons. This type of detector is one of the promising candidates for the helium-3 detector alternatives.
