Current status of development of thermal hydraulic design method for accelerator driven system in JAEA

Yoshida, Hiroyuki  ; Misawa, Takeharu; Suzuki, Takayuki*; Takase, Kazuyuki

To perform thermal hydraulic design of the acceleration driven system (ADS), a thermal hydraulic design method appropriated to the ADS must be developed and verified. In Japan Atomic Energy Agency, two types of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes have been developed for thermal hydraulic design of the current water cooled reactors. One is ACE-3D, and the other is TPFIT. In this study, as a first step for developing the thermal hydraulic design method for the ADS, ACE-3D and TPFIT were extended to treat the heavy liquid metal (HLM) as a working fluid. In this paper, two predicted results with these codes which were performed as sample calculations are described; single-phase turbulent flow in a fuel assembly of the ADS with ACE-3D and two-phase flow behavior of the windowless target with TPFIT. Validation and verification of these predicted results will be scheduled based on the experimental results obtained by KALLA at FZK and other test facilities of foreign research institutions under the framework of DEMETRA in EUROTRANS.
