The use of autonomous PET as an imaging diagnostic for laser-driven ion beam radiotherapy (L-IBRT) has unique features and limitations which must be well understood for its implementation. We explore the characteristics of PET as an imaging technique for laser-driven proton radiotherapy. Simulations by the PHITS code show clear differences between the distribution of positron emission and the corresponding proton dose distribution. To better define the role of autonomous PET in L-IBRT these distinctions are presented along with recent experimental PET data taken with phantom targets.
