A position-sensitive neutron detector that can be alternative to a conventional helium-3 gas detector is vital to address emerging helium-3 shortage problem. We have proposed a new position-sensitive scintillator detector that employs wavelength-shifting fibers for light read out. The prototype detector that has pixels of 64 $$times$$ 64 with a pixel size of 5 $$times$$5 mm was prepared. The detector exhibited a spatial resolution of 5 mm, $$gamma$$ sensitivity of about 10$$^{-6}$$ and a detector efficiency of about 20% for thermal neutrons, confirming the feasibility as a beam line detector for the single crystal diffractometer.
