Experimental studies of the effect of the ortho/para ratio on the neutronic performance of a liquid hydrogen moderator for a pulsed neutron source

パルス中性子源用液体水素減速材のオルソ・パラ比が中性子特性に与える影響の測定

液体水素は、大強度核破砕中性子源における実用可能な冷減速材材料である。液体水素減速材の中性子特性は、オルソ・パラ比に依存している。本研究では、液体水素のオルソ・パラ比が中性子特性に与える影響について測定を行った。測定の結果、オルソ・パラ比によって、最大20%中性子強度が変化し、また、パラ水素濃度が高くなるに従い、パルスピーク強度は高く、パルス幅が狭くなることが実験により確認された。さらに、非結合型減速材においては、パラ水素濃度の増加に伴い、パルスの減衰も早くなることが明らかになった。

Liquid hydrogen is a realistic cold moderator material for high-power spallation neutron sources. The neutronic performance of a hydrogen moderator depends on the ortho/para ratio of the hydrogen, and thus experimental data are needed that will clarify the ortho/para ratio effects on neutronic performance. In this study, we measured the neutronic performance of a liquid hydrogen moderator at several para-hydrogen ratios. The neutron energy spectra changes within 20%, depending on the para-hydrogen ratios. With increasing para-hydrogen ratio, the pulse peak intensity increases and the pulse width becomes narrower. With a decoupled moderator, the pulse decay becomes faster. In comparison with the figure of merit (FOM), the para-hydrogen moderator showed almost the same performance as that of the methane moderator considered to be the best moderator for the pulsed neutron source.
