Status of fission gas dynamics programme

The JAEA and IRSN are planning an experimental program to clarify the dynamics in fission gas release from fuel pellets under reactivity-initiated accident (RIA) conditions. In the Fission Gas Dynamics (FGD) test, high burnup fuel pellets are pulse-irradiated in the NSRR, and dynamic behavior of fission gas release and its contribution to the mechanical load on the cladding are evaluated. This report presents the objectives of the FGD programme, progress of the test preparation, pending questions and preliminary calculation results of high burnup fuel tests.
