PVA hydrogel wound dressing and CM-chitin/chitosan crosslinked by irradiation techniques

In this presentation, we introduce topics about a wound dressing and metal adsorbents prepared by irradiation techniques. (1) Hydrogel wound dressing for moist healing has been developed by a combined technology of radiation processing and coating/adhesive tape technology done by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency and Nichiban Co. Ltd., respectively. The PVA hydrogel sheet prepared by low energy electron beam was applied as wound dressing. This dressing has some advantages over conventional wound dressing, as it provides painless fixing onto the wound area, allows complete removal without leaving some residues and promotes fast healing. This is useful new product for application in medical field. The hydrogel wound dressing is now commercialized under brand name VIEWGEL by Nichiban Co. Ltd. (2) We found that water soluble polysaccharides derivatives such as carboxymethylcellulose, carboxymethylstarch and carboxymethylchitin/chitosan lead to radiation crosslinking at high concentrated aqueous solution (more than 10%, paste-like condition). It was proved that the crosslinking is remarkably affected by their concentration and degree of substitution. It was confirmed that high concentration and high degree of substitution are better for crosslinking. The carboxymethyl-chitin/chitosan hydrogels had adsorption capacities for some metal ions such as Cu, Au, and Pd.
