Local-structure of Gd$$_{2}$$Zr$$_{2}$$O$$_{7}$$ and Gd$$_{2}$$Ti$$_{2}$$O$$_{7}$$ probed by EXAFS and $$^{155}$$Gd-Moessbauer methods

Pyrochlore (P) Gd$$_{2}$$Zr$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ has recently revived significant research interest due to its superior radiation tolerance to P Gd$$_{2}$$Ti$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ hitherto considered as the prominent Pu-immobilization matrix. P Gd$$_{2}$$Zr$$_{2}$$O$$_{7}$$ is also known to have a peculiar second ionic-conductivity maximum. Motivated by these incentives, we have lately conducted a systematic EXAFS and $$^{155}$$Gd-Moessbauer study of Gd$$_{y}$$(Zr or Ti)$$_{1-y}$$O$$_{2-y/2}$$ prepared by unconventional balling-milling techniques and subsequent different-types of heat-treatments. Those results are comparatively presented and discussed from the local-structure side revealed by the either method in a different fashion.
