Extraction properties of tetramethylmalonamide resin for actinide ions

Shimada, Asako ; Nash, K.*; Alexandratos, S.*; Yang, Y.*

The extraction properties of tetramethylmalonamide (TMMA) resin have been studied for the separation of actinides from radioactive waste solutions. High weight distribution ratios (${it D}$w) of Th and U were obtained from HNO$$_{3}$$ and HCl solutions in the concentration range 0.01 to 10 M. ${it D}$w of Am was over 60 from HNO$$_{3}$$ solutions in that concentration range, however, it decreased to 5 from 0.01 to 1 M HCl solutions. The influence of co-existing metal ions on ${it D}$w of Am from 3 M HNO$$_{3}$$ solution was studied. ${it D}$w of Am was decreased with an increasing Fe$$^{3+}$$ concentration due to the competition. On the other hand, ${it D}$w of Am was slightly increased in the presence of Ni$$^{2+}$$. In order to evaluate stripping agent, the influence of some organic acids and chelate agents on ${it D}$w of Th and U were investigated.
