This study aims at the development of neutron diffraction technique of geological materials. Measurements of residual strain in a rock sample and in situ strain measurement on rock specimens under uniaxial compression have been performed at the engineering materials diffractometer at J-PARC. In the residual strain measurements, anisotropy of strain value in respect to the direction was found. On the other hand, in the in situ strain measurements, diffraction peaks shifted to lower value depend on compressive load. The engineering materials diffractometer at J-PARC has potential ability to clarify strain distribution inside rock specimen nondestructively. In situ strain measurements on rock specimens under various conditions will provide us a new insight into rock deformation and rock fracturing mechanism.
